Pictured: Frida Kahlo, Ethel Merman, Ayn Rand, Gala Dali, Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, Emily Dickinson, Lorde, Peggy Guggenheim, Sylvia Plath & Mary Shelley, some of my favorite women in the World.  Who, despite depression, pain, anxiety, turmoil, relationships, & political and societal pressure, stayed true to their hearts, set their sites, made their mark, and hit their target.

I know that I wouldn’t be who I am without these women.  They inspire me so directly when things seem harder than usual to keep going!

This Weeks Mood Board is concentrated on Self Love.

In 1956 psychologist and social philosopher Erich Fromm proposed that loving oneself is different from being arrogantconceited or egocentric. He proposed that loving oneself means caring about oneself, taking responsibility for oneself, respecting oneself, and knowing oneself (e.g. being realistic and honest about one’s strengths and weaknesses). He proposed, further, that in order to be able to truly love another person, a person needs first to love oneself in this way.

I encourage this in everyone, and it’s something I’ve been working on inherently for a long time.  I was tired of waiting for something to change, or for happiness, safety and security to come galloping over the next horizon.  I’d get my dream job or my dream relationship or get into my dream school and still happiness eluded me.  I’d have more money than I knew what to do with and still, happiness wouldn’t come.

Without Self-Love, we are half-loving. I realized that much of the way that I viewed myself, and the world around me, was a result of all the messages and opinions that have been ingrained into me by the company that I have kept.  Once you do this, you begin to sift through all the crap you’ve been fed about how you should behave, how you should look, how much you should weigh, what you should wear, where you should shop, what you should drive, how and where you should live, what you should do for a living, how you should raise your children or what you owe your parents, and you start recognizing that all of these decisions are completely up to you, and that anyone who does not support them belongs in someone else’s life.

You learn to open up to new ideas and different points of view and you begin redefining who you are and what you stand for. You learn the difference between want and need, and you begin to discard the doctrines and values you’ve outgrown, and start to get comfortably in the process of going with your instincts. You learn to distinguish between guilt and responsibility, and the importance of setting boundaries and learning to say NO.

You learn to look at your relationships differently: as they are and not as you would have them be. You stop trying to control people, situations, and outcomes. You learn that just as people grow and change, you also must grow and change and adapt – much like exercise, the workout does not stop once you’ve achieved the perfect body.  That body is only the beginning.

And, you learn that alone does not mean lonely.

One of my favorite quotes about distinguishing who should be in your life is this:

You Can Feed 1,000 People, But You Can’t Carry 3 People On Your Back

You will be kinder to others, and they will follow suit.  In this way, you attract the kind of people who want a Self-Loving person in their life, and you create pathways & journeys with incredible individuals who truly understand you.

If this is not already a daily practice in your life (and even if it is!) I wish you all the luck.

Thank you very much.

Weekend Mood Board: Spring in Your Step

Weekend Mood Board: Spring in Your Step

Image

I am SO bad at staying in tune with my bad ( social networking, photo updating, geo-tagging, post-queing ) self when I’m traveling!  All of my apologies & then some, but it’s hard when every corner of your life is totally enchanted by a country you’ve never seen before!  Traveling doesn’t lend itself to uploading and editing photos, but that doesn’t mean I have to leave you guys in the dark!  I thought I’d do my Mood Board Monday a little early and put some color into your weekend!   I’ve spent more time on a plane, in a train and en route to a destination this month than any in the rest of my life combined (Mexico & Italy within three weeks of each other – what the heck was I thinking?!), and I’m missing the feeling of just doing blissfully nothing and I’ve really been feeling/missing/wanting sunshine – and lots of it!

Enjoy!

Mood Board Monday : Never Give Up

I worked on my own “Thank You” Mood Board this weekend, comprised of some lovely notes from friends & clients!  The background is a collage of clippings from last week’s LA Weekly, and was really fun and therapeutic to work on!

Happy Monday everyone!

Thought I’d share some internet finds that have been inspiring me for the upcoming week!  I’m getting myself ready for the amazing pilgrimage that will be Italy with some Michaelangelo, which has been putting me in the mood for interesting portraits… I’m really feeling hearts and a Can-Do attitude!  I feel like I’m going through a few different kinds of spiritual cleansings that are helping me center.  I’ve been reading my unedited 1932 copy of Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography (thanks, Illiad!) and organizing after unpacking tons and tons from Mexico!  It’s one of those “get my stuff together” weeks!

Hope you all enjoy yours!

The Importance of Mood Boards

The Importance of Mood Boards

One of my favorite ways to tackle an Action Plan is with a mood board.  Normally, these are projects I do in 3D: posting up my inspiration on a corkboard in my room of taped to my fridge or on my wall.  The importance of organizational thought and color patterns are absolutely essential in feeling like we’ve got our stuff together!  With everything I have going on in my life right now, it’s super important for me to take a step back and remind myself that it can all be handled.  They’re also really essential for my music and modeling career and artistic visions!  These personal, professional boards are my deepest thoughts, my support systems, letters from friends, inspirational desires, and are filled with color.

 Image

Polyvore gives you a greet opportunity to do this online!  With their help, I’ve created some mood boards of my own to share!  Also, you can now add Visual Exchange to your Polyvore Music choices! It’s available on iTunes or Amazon for $0.99 now! Tara Mackey - Visual Exchange Thank you to Polyvore for your love & support!
